English 1 is a comprehensive high school English course designed to help students become confident readers, writers, and critical thinkers. Through engaging literature, interactive lessons, and practical writing instruction, students develop the skills needed for future high school English courses and beyond. Throughout the year, students will read a variety of literary works, including short stories, poetry, drama and novels. They will also learn to analyze characters, themes, literary devices, and an author's purpose. Writing instruction progresses from narrative and analytical writing to poetry and persuasive essays, with an emphasis on organization, evidence, revision and MLA formatting. Students also strengthen their grammar, vocabulary, and editing skills through weekly practice integrated with the literature being studies. Topics include: *Narrative writing *Literary analysis *Poetry *Drama *Short stories *Grammar and mechanics *Vocabulary development *MLA formatting *Essay writing Major Literary Works -Romeo and Juliet by William Shakespeare -Animal Farm by George Orwell -The Hiding Place by Corrie Ten Boom -A collection of classic short stories and poems Students complete reading assignments, quizzes, writing projects and literary analyses throughout the course, building academic skills and confidence as independent learners. StoryRoot English Courses approach high-quality secular literature through a Christian worldview, encouraging students to thoughtfully examine themes, characters, choices and ideas in light of biblical truth. Students are guided to become careful readers, effective writers, and discerning young adults who can engage meaningfully with a wide range of texts.
